South America has no single, unified trademark system comparable to the one in the EU. Protection has to be sought country by country, so a trademark must be registered separately in each country where you want it protected.
An exception worth knowing
Some countries, Colombia for example, let you file through the Madrid System, which can simplify the process for those markets.
