The five-year dependency period
An International Registration is tied to the trademark application or registration in your base country for its first five years. During that time, the fate of the base trademark determines the fate of the international one.
What can trigger cancellation
If the base-country trademark is any of the following during those five years, the consequences reach every country in your International Registration:
- Rejected
- Withdrawn
- Canceled
- Limited
The result
In any of these cases, WIPO will cancel the International Registration. The cancellation applies to the base country and to all of the designated countries.
