Missing a renewal date doesn't always mean the end of your trademark. In most jurisdictions, a grace period follows the deadline, and you can still renew during that time by paying a late fee.
If the grace period also runs out without a renewal, the trademark can be canceled. Once that happens, the mark becomes available, and someone else may register it.
